It took longer than it should’ve done for Kitson to fill us in on the fundamentals. She was prone to getting sidetracked, and we had to interrupt her multiple times to get her to focus. For a woman who’d claimed to be too busy to see us today, she seemed in no rush now.

“Do you live alone, Ms Kitson?” I asked when she was done.

She gave me a coy look. “I wouldn’t mind a police escort to keep me safe, if that’s what you mean, Sean.”

“It’s DI Ellis,” I corrected stonily. “Please answer the question.”

She pouted. “My sister is living with me, and, well, there’s Matilde, too.”

“Matilde?” Rebecca prompted when she didn’t elaborate.

“The maid. She stays the night sometimes. She’s been quite concerned by this… fan outside.”

“Fan? The stalker?” I said.

Kitson blinked. “Well, yes. It seems cruel to call them that, though, don’t you think? They’re clearly not very well.”

I looked at her incredulously. “What about these private photos that have gone online—”

“With all due respect, detective, I don’t wish to talk about that. I’ll be dealing with that myself. Privately.”

I was silent for a long moment, trying to weigh up how to respond. Rebecca got in first.

“Don’t you think this stalker could’ve been the one to release the pictures, Ms Kitson? Doesn’t that worry you?”

Kitson frowned at her. “No. I know exactly who released the pictures, and I’ll deal with the matter.” She gave us a stern look that didn’t allow room for disagreement, and I reluctantly let it go. I stashed it away in the back of my mind, though, to revisit at a later date. It made sense that Kitson didn’t want to strangers about private pictures that had got on the internet against her will, but I wished that she was more willing to cooperate with us to stop it from happening again.

“What about your security team? Are they staying with you?” I asked, changing the topic for now. She immediately jumped on the question, clearly eager to leave the mention of the photos behind.

“Oh, they’re just here in the daytime. One keeps me company here every day, on a rota, of course.”

“What about at events?”

“I need them all, then, naturally.”

“Are they worried about the stalker?”

“Oh no,” she said, waving a hand. “They know that it’s all in hand, no cause for concern.”

I grunted, making a note. It seemed strange to me that Kitson’s maid was more worried about the star’s safety than her own security team, but maybe they really didn’t think this stalker was a threat. It was my opinion that someone who was obsessed shouldn’t be underestimated.

“Who had access to your dogs?” Rebecca asked her.

Kitson gave Rebecca a faintly irritated look, but her desire to get her dogs back overpowered her apparent dislike of Rebecca as a person.

“Lucie and Lola have their dog walkers, and the groomers see them every week. They go to different salons, they have strong personalities, and they have their favourites.” She hummed to herself, a faint frown at her tanned brow.
