It took longer than it shouldâve done for Kitson to fill us in on the fundamentals. She was prone to getting sidetracked, and we had to interrupt her multiple times to get her to focus. For a woman whoâd claimed to be too busy to see us today, she seemed in no rush now.
âDo you live alone, Ms Kitson?â I asked when she was done.
She gave me a coy look. âI wouldnât mind a police escort to keep me safe, if thatâs what you mean, Sean.â
âItâs DI Ellis,â I corrected stonily. âPlease answer the question.â
She pouted. âMy sister is living with me, and, well, thereâs Matilde, too.â
âMatilde?â Rebecca prompted when she didnât elaborate.
âThe maid. She stays the night sometimes. Sheâs been quite concerned by this⦠fan outside.â
âFan? The stalker?â I said.
Kitson blinked. âWell, yes. It seems cruel to call them that, though, donât you think? Theyâre clearly not very well.â
I looked at her incredulously. âWhat about these private photos that have gone onlineââ
âWith all due respect, detective, I donât wish to talk about that. Iâll be dealing with that myself. Privately.â
I was silent for a long moment, trying to weigh up how to respond. Rebecca got in first.
âDonât you think this stalker couldâve been the one to release the pictures, Ms Kitson? Doesnât that worry you?â
Kitson frowned at her. âNo. I know exactly who released the pictures, and Iâll deal with the matter.â She gave us a stern look that didnât allow room for disagreement, and I reluctantly let it go. I stashed it away in the back of my mind, though, to revisit at a later date. It made sense that Kitson didnât want to strangers about private pictures that had got on the internet against her will, but I wished that she was more willing to cooperate with us to stop it from happening again.
âWhat about your security team? Are they staying with you?â I asked, changing the topic for now. She immediately jumped on the question, clearly eager to leave the mention of the photos behind.
âOh, theyâre just here in the daytime. One keeps me company here every day, on a rota, of course.â
âWhat about at events?â
âI need them all, then, naturally.â
âAre they worried about the stalker?â
âOh no,â she said, waving a hand. âThey know that itâs all in hand, no cause for concern.â
I grunted, making a note. It seemed strange to me that Kitsonâs maid was more worried about the starâs safety than her own security team, but maybe they really didnât think this stalker was a threat. It was my opinion that someone who was obsessed shouldnât be underestimated.
âWho had access to your dogs?â Rebecca asked her.
Kitson gave Rebecca a faintly irritated look, but her desire to get her dogs back overpowered her apparent dislike of Rebecca as a person.
âLucie and Lola have their dog walkers, and the groomers see them every week. They go to different salons, they have strong personalities, and they have their favourites.â She hummed to herself, a faint frown at her tanned brow.
